This segment describes the communications between Khrushchev and Castro, and Khruschev and Kennedy, in an effort to resolve the Cuban Missile Crisis. It begins with an excerpt from a letter Castro wrote to Khrushchev. When Castro learns that Cuba is not being considered in the negotiations between the two super powers he writes to Khrushchev and expresses support for Cuban martyrdom so long as the United States will be destroyed. Historians credit this letter for causing the Soviets to more seriously consider ways to avoid nuclear war.
